Background & Client Overview
In the extreme climate of the Middle East, high-capacity HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems are the lifeblood of any commercial building. A prominent electromechanical contracting company in Dubai was awarded the contract to install industrial-grade water chillers and ventilation units for a new hospital complex. They purchased the massive industrial chillers from North America and required a logistics partner capable of handling the ocean freight, customs clearance, and temporary warehousing in the UAE.
The Logistics Challenge
Industrial hospital chillers are massive, oversized loads (Out of Gauge or OOG cargo) that cannot fit into standard shipping containers. They require specialized flat-rack containers and heavy-lift cranes. The construction site was not yet ready to receive the chillers when they were scheduled to arrive in Dubai, meaning the cargo had to be cleared through customs and then safely stored in a secure, climate-controlled environment until the site was prepped.
The LRG Trading co. Solution
We provided an end-to-end logistics package to solve the client’s staging problem.
- OOG Ocean Freight Management: We coordinated the ocean freight from North America, ensuring the flat-rack containers were securely stowed on the vessel.
- Specialized Customs Clearance: Because hospital equipment often benefits from specific tariff exemptions in the UAE, our clearance team applied for and successfully secured duty exemptions for the chiller units by presenting the required Ministry of Health and hospital project documentation.
- Heavy-Lift Transport: Upon clearance at Jebel Ali Port, we utilized specialized low-bed trailers and heavy-capacity mobile cranes to carefully lift and transport the oversized units out of the port facilities.
- Flexible UAE Warehousing: Since the hospital site was not ready, we transported the chillers to LRG Trading co.’s secure logistics yard. We provided safe, insured, and monitored warehousing for four weeks until the client gave the green light for final delivery.
The Result
By utilizing LRG Trading co. for the entire supply chain—from sea freight and clearance to warehousing and final delivery—the client benefited from a single point of contact. Our ability to secure customs duty exemptions for healthcare-related construction materials saved the client thousands of dollars, while our flexible warehousing solution kept their project timeline intact without forcing them to clutter an unready construction site.
